Hi folks,

I need to upgrade my optivisor, or at least get a new headband. The holes that the pins for the lens snap into have opened up over time and the lenses fall out. Luckily it hasn’t damaged a top or something, but it’s just a matter of time.

I wear glasses so I need the headband style.

Any recommendations beyond just ordering a new headband?

I've used several down through the decades but I recently bought one from Harbor Freight, and it's really good. I light is aimable and very bright. It's got 3 lenses that work well at a couple different distances, making it pretty useful for paperwork or at the bench. My only gripe is the adjustment to tighten the visor keeps loosening when I lift the visor. Not a real pain, but you get the idea.

Not expensive but very functional, checks all my boxes:

• Inexpensive
• Headband Adjustment is solid- doesn't slip
• Headband Very Comfortable
• Lightweight
• Lighted (just OK)
• One additional Flip lens
• On-board loupe (I swapped it out for a replacement loupe from OptiVisor fo$10)
• Has proven very durable

I bought an extra one, it's been in the box for a couple of years.

We may be checking out a solution that my dentist turned me onto that is made in Ann Arbor as well. They are a couple thousands dollars and engineered so that your head can be in the position of looking forward when it is focusing on someone say on a work surface in front of and below you. So no tilting your head downward that happens to kill my back after some hours. Brad this might help you and your back too.

Dave has the name, I don't but I'll report more if we get one or two and try them out. My dentist who teaches at the U of M dental school swears by these.

I gave my tricked out optivisor away and use 2.5 readers instead now and like it a lot better.

I've also quit using my Optivisors. I found some 2.5 reader safety glasses I like and I just use those.

I've owned quite a few but I like these best. Of course, there are plenty of others.

I have a 3X lighted magnifier with an arm on my bench. I have 3x readers that I use sometimes. I like carving scrolls sitting down, holding them in my hand. I like the readers better than the optivisor. I only use my optivisor now if it is a little dark in the computer room in the morning, and I can't read the terrible Hebrew font in a Hebrew New Testament! Too many letters look the same, and they did nothing to differentiate them more. I should just leave it upstairs, so I don't have to go down for it. In the dimmer light, my 3X progressives don't work as well. One day this summer I was out in the sun, and I could read things without glasses.

Why be normal?

Good lighting does make a huge difference and I've made sure that I have extra task lighting everywhere I might want to do any detail work both in the shop and in my house.

I've switched to readers safety glasses too, but only because I had cataract surgery a few years ago and don't have to wear glasses any more...
I have a set of 2.5s and a set of 1.25s. I use the lower powered ones when I'm using a bandsaw or tablesaw or something like that and the 2.5s when I'm doing close up work.

I got the OptiVisor w/ground glass lens 2.0X - 10" focus length and I couldn't be happier with them.
There is a small problem though, they're so comfortable I forget I have them on sometimes. I'll be getting out of my clothes for a quick shower and whoops there they are.
The best thing is the little headband tightening adjustment you can fine tune it to your head so well that you could be hanging upside down and it wouldn't fall off.
